Based on an ongoing research into forest systems, materials are collected in the woods: plants, stones and minerals, objects left behind by visitors, products of forestry. The materials collected represent social power structures or specific global dependencies: rainforest charcoal, mica schist, copper, corroded foliage, branches, an LED, a tillandsia, a piece of sapwood of a felled mahogany tree, fool's gold, and other.
The matters are scanned on a high resolution flatbed scanner and edited with content aware fill – an algorithm commonly used to remove unwanted areas of an image and fill them with information based on their surroundings instead. The algorithm is used here not to get rid of information but to fill the whole image based on a small selection of the scanned forest material. The resulting images are repeatedly translated into different media.
Thoughts on the concept of the landscape in art and society, on mediality, contemporary communication technologies, global resource networks and supply chains shape these reinterpretations.
